The barren region known as the Ravaged Nomads is a land populated with the defeated folk of nomadic herdsmen and hunters that once roamed these northern plains in great numbers. The population had been depleated over the centuries almost to the point of extinction due to the numerous conflicts from their more savage neighbors including the barbarians of Golrune and the hobgoblins of Argonak. The remaining nomads eke out an existance as best they can in the small areas of grassland and tundra where they dwell raising herds of reindeer and hunting elk and bison that roam the area in relative abundance.
There is no central government and each tribal grouping is led by a clan chieftain. Most clans are now violent and warlike. They also tend to be most protective of what little territory they have remaining. They will kill humanoids on sight (orcs, goblins and hobgoblins) and will imprison or torture nearly anyone else caught trespassing on their ancestral lands. Most nomads practice a faith of ancestor worship while also paying tribute to a number of deities. They are known to tatoo their skin with sacred symbols and runes. Each individual tribe is known collectively by an animal totem which is painted on their shields and banners (ie. the White Wolf Clan, the Stunning Eagle Clan, the Death Bear Clan, etc.).
A small number of reclusive dwarven communities still mine the hills to the far west of the plains and will occasionally trade with some of the less evil nomads for skins and meat. The small numbers of orcs and hobgoblins dwelling in these lands are often outcasts or former slaves from Golrune and Argonak. They are known to be exceptionally violent and protective of their small clans often claiming small tracks of territory in more remote locations, particularly near the Spineridge Mountains.
The human tribes, though each considered an independent social grouping, are united in a way by the mysterious female spellcasters known collectively as the 'Weirds Sisters.' These women are mostly skilled adepts but some also have levels of wizard, cleric or sorcerer. The Weird Sisters are highly knowledgable in the arts of herbalism and healing. They will generally serve as tribal advisers to the chieftain and as liaisons between the various human clans. They are not physically related to one another but rather share a spiritual connection. The Weird Sisters often lead very lonely lives typically dwelling apart from the rest of their clan and often feared by the general population.
