The race of the halflings are a diminuitive folk about half the size of an average adult human, thus the name. They call themselves the "holbyts," or 'hole builders,' in their native tongue which is traced back to their custom of building burrow-homes . The halfling race is primarily a pastoral people fond of idyllic settings. In general, they are great farming folk and lovers of lifes little comforts. Thye do occasionally go on little adventures from time to time to add a little spice to the general routine. Their shortness of stature aids in their ability to move with stealth and perform undercover work. Many halfling heroes of hold have been known for their consummate skills as scouts, spies, rogues and dangerhunters. Most halflings also have a great respect for the outdoors but tend to be more attuned to the environment within a mere stones throw from their frontdoors rather than "nature" as an abstract concept.
The three basic tenets of halfling life, as symbolized by the holy symbol of their creator goddess Almadora, are 'Faith, Family and Field.' They tend to be traditionalists that practice many of the same customer as their ancestors. Thee is often a strong moral sense of community and faith in the halfling pantheon, particularly devotion to the mother goddess who was said to have created the halfling race during the Dim Time. Communities are often centered along family lines and ancestor worship is a common practice. They also tend to establish homes in wide fields with fertile soil conducive to farming.
On the average, halflings are a cheerful, friendly and hospitable group that observe culturally established rules of hosting. Halfling travelers and visitors understand that they would never be turned away from a halfling home and guests are to be treated with respect even if you may agree with their beliefs. As a halfling, you are also expected to take in guests with open arms, a hearty meal and a bit of strong brew. Out of the three subraces of holbyt, the greenthumbs tend to be the most shelted of the race since they often dwell in more removed locations. The stouthearts and fleetfoots are a bit more urbane than their more rural cousins and tend to be more experienced in dealing with other races.
Fleetfoot Halfling The fleetfoot halfling is the most commonly encountered halfling race. They are generally quite laid back and easy-going. They are found in most any environment and have their stats are identical to the information found in the Dungeons & Dragons Players Handbook ver. 3.5. Most halfling rogues, bards and sorcerers are fleetfoot halflings.
Strongheart Halfling- The strongheart halfling, as a rule, tend to be a very focused and determined people. They are generally very good natured and strong-willed as well as strong of body, at least compared to other halfling races. Most halfling fighters or paladins tend to be strongheart halflings.
Greenthumb Halfling- The greenthumb halfling is the agrarian subspecies of halfling found in remote and rural areas. They have a great talent when in comes to agriculture and animal husbandry. Most halfling rangers and druids tend to be greenthumb halflings. The majority of the greenthumb halflings, however, are rather suspicious of adventurers and prefer very simple, quite lives.
