Nimrodel is a haven of thieves and cutthroats. It is an ideal place to go if one wants to get lost or engage in some shady transaction without answering a lot of questions. There is some animosity between the City of Knaves, as it is commonly called, and the City of the Magi to the south on the southern shores of the Springwater Lake. Nimrodel was actually founded by rebellious rogues from Arcania who had been expelled from that city in the mid-7th century of the New Age. These rogues established an outpost on the western shores of the lake which eventually grew into a profitable city-state.

The area controlled by the government of Nimrodel between the Withering Wood and the Gloom Mounds has generally been considered free territory simply because none of the surrounding major nations wanted anything to do with the region. Its lawlessness and monster infestations have never been a strong selling point though it is ripe for adventures of all sorts. The land is very fertile though and the townsfolk of the numerous small villages and hamlets that dot the countryside are a hearty bunch with a fierce spirit of independence.

The City of Knaves is defended primarily by a mercenary force commanded by the powerful Myrmidons, an elite fighting force on the payroll of the Office of the Prefect. Most Myrmidons are high level fighters but a few monks and rogues also are among their number. The Prefects of Nimrodel have longed to get their hand on whatever valuable secrets they can obtain from their rivals in Arcania. They maintain a vast network of spies to aid in this goal.

Rumors: The nearby Withering Wood is an almost constant source of trouble and adventure. It is said to be the home of many dangerous beings not the least of which is a noble verdant dragon. The northern Gloom Mounds are a known haunt of the undead. The Prefect will often hire adventurers to help maintain and clear the northern trade route between these two dangerous regions that leads to Mordregia.
