Staff of Windstar

The artifact known as the Staff of Windstar is a potent magical device attuned to the elemental air. Crafted several centuries ago by the Archsorceress Aeriel the Windrider, the staff had been used by nobles of the Peregrine Isles in defense of their kingdom until its mysterious disappearance during a pirate raid in the later 10th century.

The Staff of Windstar is a wooden quarterstaff six feet long and topped with a light blue gemstone, possibly a sapphire but with an unusal opaque quality to it that seems to swirl with changing mists. The staff is carved at the end with a stylized eagle baring its talons, the symbol of the Windrider Mages. Ancient legends mention that a powerful elder air elemental was imprisoned within the staff during the time of its crafting, possibly a prince of its kind. If the artifact were ever broken or destroyed, the elemental would be released to take its revenge upon anyone in the near vacinity of the staff.

The Staff of Windstar can be used as a +1 speed quarterstaff but its true power lies within its magical spell-like effects. The bearer of the staff may use the artifact to cast the following spells:

The Save DC for these abilities is equal to 17 + spell level. All spell affects are as if cast by a 17th level caster.

The Staff of Windstar carries the following side effects- the user slowly becomes more flighty and carefree eventually becoming Chaotic in alignment (either CG, CN or CE depending on original alignment). The bearer of the staff also receives a -2 penalty on all saves against earth-type spells and effects.

Suggested means of destruction: Submerge the staff in the heated Mudpits of the Great Khan of the Dao in the heart of the Endless Labrynth or crack the staff against the Cornerstone of the World.
