The baton known as the lamprey rod is said to have been first crafted by the merfolk wizards of the Sunken City of Midlantis and was bestowed to their human allies many ages ago. Said to possess the powers of the blood-sucking fish the rod is named after, the lamprey rod is commonly fashioned from bone or ivory and decorated with an inlay of mother-of-pearl in a delicate filigree pattern..
Despite its perhaps fragile appearance, the rod is a sturdy weapon and functions as a +2 light mace. As long as the rod is held, the bearer of this device is also under the continuous effects of water breathing and free action.
Finally, as its name implies, the lamprey rod has the ability to drain the life essence from any being struck by the device. On a natural attack roll of 20, an opponent hit by the rod must make a successful Fortitude save against DC 17. Failure to save indicates that the rod has drained 1 temporary point of Constitution. Any being reduced to 0 Constitution is slain. Lost points may be recovered naturally at a rate of 1 point per hour. The undead, constructs and outsiders are immune to this draining effect.
Faint necromancy; CL 8th. Craft Rod, free action, magic weapon, water breathing. Price: 65,000 gp.
