All arcane magic within the World of Hyerune is empowered by a field of energy known commonly as "the Essence." This field is believed to be generated by all living matter and all forms of nature. It is a byproduct of the will of the goddess of magic known as Maya, the Queen of the Magi and it is her power that gives the field its potency.
During the Dawning of Creation, Maya used her divine influence to set an order to "life-force emanations" generated by the creations of the Elder Elemental Gods. An arcane spellcaster need only learn the ability to access this field and manipulate it in such a way as to create a desired magical effect. This manipulation is accomplished though the use of the "arcane spell."
The ancient dragons, as the Guardians of Creation, were the first beings taught by Maya herself on how to work this magical energy. Through patient study and dilligence, the dragons gained the great powers they possess to this day. It was the will of the Queen of the Magi that this spellcraft be used to augment the living conditions of all beings on Hyerune and to aid and give comfort to those able to master its forces and as a benefit for all. This awesome force however soon proved to be too tempting to those of lesser moral fiber.
While Maya spent her days in instructing the dragons, the hateful goddess Mordragh saw this Essence to be a source of power that should be used for what she thought to be a greater purpose. Like a living cancer, the Dreadmother touched the Essence and spread this infection. This corruption soon became intertwined with the Essence and allowed arcanists to use its power for more selfish or destructive goals.
