Elemental Magic
Spellcasters who chose to focus on one of the four ancient elements of Air, Earth, Fire or Water are called "Elementalists." Elementalism is similar to one of the standard Schools of Magic in that each elementalist focuses on a particular element, or elements, to the exclusion of the remaining elements. Each of the four ancient elements has its own opposing element as well as two complimentary elements. The elements listed below that appear across from one another are in opposition. Adjacent elements are complimentary.
Spellcasters who wish to study elemental magic must choose either two complimentary elements OR a single element in which to specialize. Depending on which path they chose, their magical strength will vary. Elementalists who manipulate two elements have a greater variety of spells but their spells are not as potent as an elementalist restricted to only one element.
Duo-Elementalism
By chosing two complimentary elements, a duo-elementalist has a greater variety of spells. Such spellcasters may select from the following...
- Air and Fire (conflagration)
- Earth and Water (mud)
- Air and Water (storm)
- Earth and Fire (holocaust)
Duo-Elementalists receive the following benefits and restrictions:
- You may select one extra spell at each spell level to which you currently have access. This extra spell must be from one of your two chosen elements.
- You may never cast spells from the two remaining elements. Furthermore, you are forbidden to use magical items or devices that contain such elemental magic from these remaining two elements.
- Your proficiency in your chosen elements make you more knowledgable in defending against its magic. You receive a +1 bonus on all saves against magic involving your two chosen elements.
- Your more focused spellcraft in your chosen elements also allows you to inject more power into your elemental magic making it more difficult to resist. Your opponents suffer a -1 on all saves against your two chosen elements.
- You may select one of the "elemental spirits" as your familiar rather than one of the more traditional animal familiars. Your spirit must be either one of your two chosen elements. These elemental spirits will be detailed in the "Monster" section of this website but include the Spark (fire), Dewling (water), Wisp (air), Pebble (earth) and Twigget (earth).
Pure Elementalism
Pure Elementalists are spellcasters who choose to focus on a single element to the exclusion of all others. They are more restricted therefore in the spells from which they may learn but their elemental magic is even stronger than that of the duo-elementalist.
Pure Elementalists receive the following benefits and restrictions:
- You may select one extra spell at each spell level to which you currently have access. This extra spell must be from your chosen element.
- You may never cast spells from the three remaining elements. Furthermore, you are forbidden to use magical items or devices that contain such elemental magic from these remaining three elements.
- Your proficiency in your chosen element makes you more knowledgable in defending against its magic. You receive a +2 bonus on all saves against magic involving your chosen element.
- Your more focused spellcraft in your chosen element also allows you to inject more power into your elemental magic making it more difficult to resist. Your opponents suffer a -2 on all saves against your chosen element.
