The race of genies are the physical manifestation of the four ancient elements of air, earth, fire and water. These powerful and mystical creatures are as varied as the elements they embody and are each capable of performing great magical feats. Some of the more powerful genies are said to possess the rare ability to grant wishes to mortals who succeed in enslaving them.
The four races of geniekind are the Dao (earth genies), the Djinn (air genies), the Efreet (fire genies) and the Marid (water genies). A subrace known as the Jann are a composite of the four representing all four elements. The Jann are the weakest of them all and as they are made of all four elements, tend to spend most of their time on the Prime Material Plane particularly within the region of Shafaria and the desert peninsula on the Continent of Sahelia.
The Dao
The Dao, or earth genies, are cruel taskmasters and miners made of the earth element. As a race, they dwell on the Elemental Plane of Earth in the region known as the Labyrinth of Endless Domains, a seemingly infinite system of tunnels and caverns burrowing through the solid rock of that plane. The Labyrinth is said to be rich in metals and minerals of all descriptions. The wicked Dao force their numerous slaves to mine and toil for their benefit and amusement in order to fill the genie treasure troves. The Dao slave force include pech, xorn, earth elementals and many other creature native to the Plane of Earth. The Dao are ruled by the mightiest of their kind who calls himself the Great Khan.
The Djinn
The Djinn, or air genies, are flighty and sometimes capricious embodiments of the air element. They dwell on the windswept Elemental Plane of Air in the region known as the City of Spires. This glorious citadel made of glass and steel is built atop one of the many floating islands of stone that occasionally break off from the Earth Plane and enter the realm of air. The City of Spires serves as the central hub of a number of lesser islands each of which hold a minor clan of djinn. These islands are covered with fruitful gardens and refreshing fountains where the djinn are served by wind walkers, aerial servants, air elementals, sylphs and many other creatures nature to the Plane of Air. The Djinn are governed by the wisest of their kind who calls himself the Grand Caliph.
The Efreet
The Efreeti, or fire genies, are said to be formed from congealed flame and volcanic basalt. They dwell on the oppressive Elemental Plane of Fire within an enormous volcano. Within this volcano is the heavily fortified Obsidian Citadel, a stronghold of fire, ash and smoke where daily power struggles are played. The efreei are hot-tempered and emotional and keep many slaves and prisoners whom they delight in torturing. The Efreet are served by the azer, salamanders, fire elementals and many other creatures native to the Plane of Fire. The Efreet are commanded by the most cruel of their kind who calls himself the Grand Sultan.
The Marid
The Marid, or water genies, are the most powerful of all the genie races and serve as overlords of the others. They consider themselves so above the other genies that they rarely interact with the other 'lesser' genie races. The Marid are as changable and chaotic as the water element they embody and dwell on the Elemental Plane of Water in the Sunken Palace of the Rising Tide. Warm ocean currents constantly flow through the rooms of the palace said to be made from living coral and embedded with countless jewels from the treasures of the multitude of ships lost at sea. The palace is also connected to the Bubblelace, a series of air pockets that house the non-water breathing guests of the might Marid. The Marid are served by merfolk, locathah, water elementals and many other creatures native to the Plane of Water. No single Marid is pwoerful enough to control the others and each tends to control their own destiny though they commonly band together in familiar clans with the eldest leading the rest.
