Like an ominous harbinger of doom to all who come within its influence, the Death Towers of Mordregion are dark and eerie structures of dull gray and pitch black stone that are scattered along the perimeter border of the land of Mordregion. The Lich-Lord of that realm commissioned the construction of these defensive structures to secure his power base and to serve as a base of operations for his loyal minions and undead legions.
There are a total of 50 Death Towers with several miles distance between each tower. The tower consists of a central keep three to five floors high with a dungeon complex and surrounded by a defensive curtain wall from 10-25 feet in height. The central tower is capped by a wicked looking barbed finial that serves to provide partial cover to the archers and seige weaponry. Each tower is also mounted by a number of ballistae to be used in the event of a seige.
The outer curtain wall is topped with crenalated merlons with arrow loops for archers. The gatehouse is the only entrance into and out of the Death Tower and is well defended with thick wooden doors that can be barred from the inside, a drawbridge and an iron portcullis. The entire outer perimeter of the wall is further defended by the presence of a wet moat that runs the entire length of the outer curtain. The moat, dug with the aid of slave labor, is filled with murky and foul smelling water about 7-10 feet in depth with rusted iron spikes scattered around the bottom.
Each Death Tower will be garrisoned by a small force of anywhere between 50-200 soldiers, both living and undead. Most of the soldiery are human but a number of humanoids and the undead are also garrisoned as well. The whole complex is commanded by an undead commander who strikes fear into his living troops to instill the utmost loyalty.
The forces of each Death Tower serve to defend the borders of Mordregion, patrol the regional countryside and keep the local population in check by wearing down resistance and keeping the peasant population docile. Local farming communities are called upon to provide provisions to their regional tower as well as cheap labor when minor repairs are required. Locals who dare to speak out against the Lich-Lord and who attempt to organize any form of resistance often find themselves kidnapped during the night and brought to the dungeons of one of the Death Towers. There they will be tortured and eventually slain, their corpses often providing sustainance to the undead commander or perhaps turned into an undead warrior for the Lich-Lord's armies.
