The region of Hyerune known commonly as the "Cauldron of Doom" is a large fissure that once split the ground in the land of Glorwenia near the city of Holywell. The cause of the fissure remains unknown but it is believed to have had ominous origins for the effects of the fissure are certainly well documented. Shortly after the ground split open, evil spirits began to emerge from the crevase wailing and shrieking to announce their unholy visit. Witnesses at the time of the disaster claim that actual demons appeared as well and that the fissure somehow opened up a long forgotten portal to the Realm of Demons known as Infernia.
Fortunately, before these terrible fiends could firmly establish their hold in the mortal plane, a strange figure appeared on a nearby hillock brandishing a mystical charm. Holding the charm before him, the figure summoned forth a band of angelic beings of light from the heaven. The angelic forces wielded holy blades and were held aloft upon wings of hope. Using their might, the celestial beings drove the foul spirits back into the pit from which they came.
Once the demons where banished below, the celestials departed and the lone mystic responsible for their summons instructed the local citizens to construct a massive iron lid that would be used to seal the fissure and prevent the hellish portal from being used again. The lid itself was etched with numerous holy symbols of power and warding and the entire region was avoided by all commonfolk.
In time, the iron lid and the Cauldron of Doom were eventually forgotten. The remote region became overgrown with weeds and brush, obscuring the lid from sight. The region of Glorwenia is said to be cursed, seemingly an after effect of the unholy beasts that once roamed these lands. Who knows what sort of creatures dwell within the deeps? Surely that is a place best avoided save for the truly brave or the truly foolish.
