The Kingdom of Gwythenia is the ancient homeland of the coast elves and lies along the Deeptide Sea south of the Dirtwater Swamp and west of the Whitefoam River. The elves of this realm have suffered many years of aggression from the Meridian Empire during its heyday, particularly from the forces of Westorlin. Now that the Empire is no longer what it once was, and the Grand Duchy is forced to look to the East, the Elven Kingdom can once again devote itself to the exploration and conquest of the sea. The Kingdom still maintains a number of fortified castles along the eastern borders near the Whitefoam. The land enjoys a continental moist climate with hot summers, mild winters and moderate levels of precipitation. The countryside is most conducive to the growing of grapes and the wine trade is one of the more important commodities within this domain.

Gwythenia has always had a great history of maritime exploration and it numbers quite a few famous navigators and sailors in its illustrious past. The coast elves have always looked to the sea with great love and respect. Many of the elves within this realm long for a life of adventure, particularly one at sea.

The Kingdom is on good terms with the northern Kingdom of Valoria and its vassal state of Orlandie. Furthermore, the kingdom maintains open trade with the island nation of Undine as it has for generations. The two maritime nations honor a number of treaties for both trade and military support. They view each other with mutual admiration for a love of the sea rather than as rivals. As with many coastal kingdoms, Gwythenia also supports a fairly substantial fleet of warships that patrol both Kestel Bay and the Deeptide.

Rumors: It is believed that a number of underwater cities and strongholds lie off the coast of Gwythenia. A small number of these are nothing more than ruins from ancient days but a great many are still said to be inhabited, mostly by the sea elf allies to the Coast Elf King. The largest of these sea elf communities is self-governed but forms an open alliance with their coast elf brethren. Undead from the Dirtwater Swamp pose a continuous problem as do the occasional humanoid raids from the Grandwood. Recent reports tell that a small family of dragon turtles has recently migrated into the waters off the city of Galagrond from the Narrow Sea. The beasts have been responsible for a number of attacks on merchant vessels.
