The dwarven realm of Dunland has enjoyed a history of relative peace and prosperity for most of its existance save for the brief period of time known as the Troll Wars. The dwarves of the kingdom are rather introspective and tend to keep to their own affairs. The hills and valleys of this rocky territory have always hosted a strong dwarven presence but early in the realm's history, a number of barbarian invasions from the Filani lands to the north brought in waves of human immigrants. The humans live peacefully with the dwarves as the ruling force of government.

Dunland is also known for its political fragmentation. Although ruled by a king, many other factions also hold varying degrees of powers and influence. The Five Ducal Houses each are responsible for electing a new king whenever the current one dies. The Guildmasters of the various mining guilds each have great political clout. The clerics of the church of Denethor, the chief dwarven deity, also have significant influence since many of them are also major landholders and often advise the king and side with whomever sits on the throne over the other factions.

The mining industry is highly profitable and the great mining guilds tend to be a bit on the greedy side. The Guildmasters are known to lobby for what it best for themselves first, the country second and the outside world last, if at all.

Rumors: Recent humanoid troubles from the Rushwinds, particularly goblins, have proven to be a disruption to the mining operation. The king has been forced to send military support to aid the beleaguered miners. Hill giants to the east have been spotted recently and have stolen large numbers of cattle. Villages in the eastern provinces have sent official requests for assistance to the Court of Belegond.
