The Doomguard is a hostile and violent military realm overrun with various humanoid tribes. The humans, orcs and hobgoblins are the majority and control most of the territories with many of the outlying areas, particularly along the Shadow Mountains, controlled by the lesser tribes. The most organized communities are found primarily along the coast where they have settled into permanent city-states, fortresses and encampments. In theory, the strongest military commander rules the land as the Lord-General of the Host but in practice there is very little central authority. Most regions are self-governed or have no government at all. The lawful species tend to dominate the rest and keep them in line but much of the population is evil or at the very least neutral in alignment.
This territory was once held in fealty for the Emperor of Brynthia but was overwhelmed by constant assults from the most hostile and aggressive humanoids from the mountains to the east. In time, most of this region was laid waste and abandoned by the Brynthian colonists. Those humans that did stay were mostly evil themselves and welcomed the change since they felt stifled under the strict authority of the empire. Those that could adapt carved out territories for their own. Those that could not were either slain or eaten.
The Grand Hierarch of Jarandis greatly fears this chaotic realm and would like nothing better than to sweep the humanoid hordes into the sea but lacks the strength and manpower to do so. Several attempts by the Imperial Host in the past met with unusually well-organized and bloody resistance. The humanoids no doubt have dug in deep and are not willing to give up their new found lands so easily.
